The Theme of Republic Day 2026:

The theme of 2026 Republic Day was “150 years of the national song Vande Mataram”, the soul cry of the nation, highlighting the spirit of national unity, freedom, and rich cultural heritage. Approximately 10,000 special invitees were present.The guests include individuals and groups who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to income and employment generation, along with leading innovators, start-ups, self-help groups, and top performers across various government initiatives.

Chief Guest Of the Republic Day 2026:

A defining highlight of Republic Day 2026 is the presence of its distinguished Chief Guests, underscoring India’s growing global partnerships. For the first time, two top leaders from the European Union have been invited:

• Antonio Costa, President of the European Council
• Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission

Their participation signals the deepening of India–EU relations, particularly in trade, technology, climate action, and strategic cooperation.

Indo-EU Free Trade Agreement:

After almost two decades of intermittent negotiations, India and the European Union formally concluded the India–EU Free Trade Agreement at the 16th India–EU Summit on January 27, 2026. On paper, the pact connects India with one of the world’s largest trading blocs, covering 27 countries and over 450 million consumers. In reality, it also anchors India more firmly within the Western trading system at a moment when the global trade order is undergoing major realignment.

Following the solemn tradition, the nation paid tribute to the brave personnel for their courage and commitment to the nation. The country also honor individuals for their outstanding service and contributions to the nation. The prestigious awards included the Padma Awards, and gallantry awards like the Kirti Chakra, Veer Chakra, and many more. 

Gallantry Award

On the eve of the 77th Republic Day, President Smt Droupadi Murmu approved Gallantry Awards for 70 personnel of the Armed Forces, including six posthumous honours. The awards comprise one Ashok Chakra conferred to Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla for his role in Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to land in the International Space Station; three Kirti Chakras; 13 Shaurya Chakras, including one posthumous; one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry); 44 Sena Medals (Gallantry), including five posthumous; six Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry); and two Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).

Padma Award

The Padma Awards comprise Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri awards for exceptional and distinguished services in any discipline involving public welfare. They are the second, third, and fourth-highest civilian awards in India after the Bharat Ratna. The Padma Award committee announces the list of the awardees every year on the eve of the Republic Day. The President confers the medals in a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in March/April.

The Padma Awards 2026 honour 131 individuals for outstanding contributions across diverse fields, including art, public affairs, medicine, literature, science, social service, sports, and trade. The honours, comprising the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri, also include a few posthumous awards. Beating Retreat is a century-old military tradition, symbolizing the cease of battle at sunset. In India,  Major Roberts of the Indian Army started the tradition in the 1950s. Now it is observed every year on the 29th of January as the formal closing ceremony of Republic Day. As the sun sets behind the majestic Raisina Hills, the sound of drums and bugles fills the air. It admires the supreme glory of all three divisions of the Indian armed forces, the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. 

This event is a much-awaited part of Republic Day celebrations and the whole nation’s eyes stay on the television to enjoy the Beating Retreat of the Indian armed forces.

The Dignitaries Who Attended the Beating Retreat Ceremony

A traditional horse-ridden Buggy carrying President Draupadi Murmu to the event escorted by her bodyguards dressed in striking red uniforms, added a classic charm to the event.  The other dignitaries were Vice-President C.P. The Air Force Band delivered an exceptional performance at Beating Retreat 2026, rendering pieces such as Brave Warrior, Twilight, Alert (Post Horn Gallop), and Flying Star with flawless precision. Their presentation was truly outstanding. Similarly, the Naval Band impressed the audience with stirring renditions of Namaste, Sagar Pawan, Matribhumi, Tejasvi, and Jai Bharati.

The bands presented a rich display of Swadeshi compositions and formations, featuring themes such as 150 Years of Vande Mataram, the Bhairav Battalion, Gaganyaan, women cricket world champion, and Operation Sindoor.

The ceremony drew to a close with a stirring rendition of Vande Mataram, followed by the lowering of flags, marking the formal conclusion of the Republic Day celebrations.
