Kolkata, April 23, 2026: West Bengal witnessed an extraordinary surge in voter participation during the first phase of the 2026 Assembly elections, with turnout touching nearly 90%, marking one of the highest in the state’s electoral history.

According to Election Commission data, polling across 152 constituencies recorded an impressive 89.93% turnout by evening, with final estimates crossing the 90% mark in several districts. This massive participation reflects strong voter engagement despite political tensions and logistical challenges.

The elections, being held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, are crucial in deciding the fate of 294 विधानसभा seats in the state. Early trends showed steady voter turnout throughout the day, with figures climbing from around 60% by afternoon to nearly 90% by late evening, indicating sustained enthusiasm among voters.

The high turnout is being seen as a decisive factor in what is shaping up to be a tightly contested battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Political observers believe such heavy polling could significantly influence the final outcome, often reflecting strong anti-incumbency or consolidation of voter support.

However, the voting process was not entirely smooth. Reports of sporadic violence, clashes, and allegations of voter intimidation emerged from districts such as Murshidabad and Malda, prompting deployment of central security forces to maintain order.

Adding to the controversy, the elections are being held amid concerns over a large-scale revision of voter lists, which reportedly removed millions of names ahead of polling. Despite this, voter enthusiasm remained high, with long queues seen outside polling booths since early morning.

Officials described the turnout as a “festival of democracy,” highlighting the resilience of voters who turned out in large numbers despite heat, security concerns, and political tensions.

With the second phase scheduled for April 29 and counting set for May 4, all eyes are now on whether this record-breaking turnout will translate into a decisive mandate in one of India’s most politically significant states.
